What Is AMD?Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease associated with aging that gradually destroys sharp, central vision. Central vision is needed for seeing objects clearly and for common daily tasks such as reading and driving. AMD affects the macula, the part of the eye that allows you to see fine detail. In some cases, AMD advances so slowly that people notice little change in their vision. Reducing The Risks Of ProgressionThe exact cause of AMD is unknown, and some risk factors can’t be modified, such as age, heredity, and having light skin or eye color. However, you can reduce other risk factors, by quitting smoking, losing weight, managing cholesterol levels and hypertension, and reducing your exposure to UV light. Diet and nutrition are also important factors. Unfortunately, many of us do not consume enough eye healthy foods in our diets.(5) |
