Silica, also called silicon dioxide, is a natural compound that comes in many forms. The compound is made up of two of the most abundant elements in the Earth’s crust, silicon and oxygen, and can be found in most rocks, clays and sands. Silica is also found naturally in many plants, such as leaf greens and whole grains. However most people don’t get enough Silica in their diet, and the mineral is not stored by the body which is why supplementation with a high strength product is beneficial.
We use the water-soluble form of the compound in our product which comes from the herb Horsetail and has been used widely in traditional medicine due to its health benefits linking it to the treatment of wounds, strengthening of connective tissue and it’s role in supporting the kidneys. Horsetail is the most common form of Silica used in supplements; however Silica can also be sourced from bamboo plants.
Silica has been found to strength hair by delivering essential nutrients to scalp and hair follicles which may help to prevent breakage and aid growth; it may also have benefits for skin and nails due to the affect that it has on collagen production in the body. It is therefore often taken alongside biotin, hyaluronic acid & selenium supplements.
Silica is found in many different formats including tablets, liquid, gels and powders.
